Internship opportunities at Porchlight Music Theatre are designed to provide an enriching, career-broadening experience for qualified college and graduate students. The level of responsibility and the ongoing workload of an ever-growing artistic institution require that interns be highly motivated, energetic and self-reliant.

ADMINISTRATIVE INTERNSHIPS: 

Porchlight offers internships in 3 different areas: Development/Fundraising, Marketing/Social Media and General Management. While you may spend majority of your time supporting one department Porchlight encourages our interns to experience all aspects of running a non-profit arts organization. There will be projects that all interns will work on together.  Scheduling is usually 2-3 days a week.

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTIONS: 

DEVELOPMENT/FUNDRAISING

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with gift processing and database maintenance. 
  • Receive donations, enter donation information into Total Info, and ensure accurate and timely acknowledgment
  • Continually refine data quality, update patron records, and implement improved data structures 
  • Assist in executing fundraising or special events (ICONS Gala, Chicago, Sings etc...) 
  • Provide courteous and prompt customer service to attendees leading up to and following cultivation events
  • Assist in developing databases of community groups 
  • Conducting fundraising prospect research 

Desired Skills and Experience 

  • Interest in arts administration, development, or music theatre preferred
  • Experience with working with any type of donor database a plus
  • Positive outlook, friendly disposition
  • Professional attitude 
  • Eager to take the initiative on specific projects 
  • Strong desire to learn
  • Strong attention to detail
  • High level of organization skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, especially in customer service 
  • Ability to multi-task, self-manage and prioritize
  • Comfortable working on a PC with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, etc) 
  • Work collaboratively with others 
  • Strong critical thinking skills

 

MARKETING/SOCIAL MEDIA

  Responsibilities:

  • Assist in planning and execution of social media, digital marketing, direct mail and other campaigns 
  • Assist in the execution of promotional videos 
  • Assist with data management and analysis 
  • Maintain press and photo archives 
  • Manage distribution of promotional materials 
  • Conduct research for special projects   
  • Other duties as assigned 

Desired Skills and Experience 

  • Experience with social media marketing, graphic design or video production a plus
  • Interest in arts administration, marketing, or music theatre preferred.

GENERAL MANAGEMENT

  Responsibilities:

  • Assist with processing subscriptions and cultivating new subscribers
  • Assist with distribution of promotional or development materials 
  • Assist with the execution of fundraising or other special events
  • General non-profit arts administration and customer service; answering phones, emails and door traffic
  • General office support: photocopying, filing and other basic office functions 
  • Other duties as assigned 

Desired Skills and Experience 

  • Experience in an office setting a plus
  • Interest in arts administration or music theatre preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, especially in customer service 
  • Positive outlook, friendly disposition
  • Professional attitude

INTERNSHIP DATES:

Porchlight accepts applications on a rolling basis. 

Fall Internships: Approximately September - December
Application requested by: July 1 

Winter/Spring Internship: Approximately January - June (or a portion thereof)
Application requested by: December 1

Summer Internship: Approximately May - August
Application requested by: April 1

 

INTERNSHIP BENEFITS:

PRODUCTION INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

These internship positions are available on a per-production basis only. Scheduling is flexible, though production internships have specific times and are 2-3 months in duration. Please keep in mind that our season begins Septemeber and ends in May. 

There are no production internships from June-early August. 

(Porchlight Music Theatre does not offer internships in directing, choreography or set design)
